Review of Second Journal "Phase Theory can be used to improve reading comprehension in children"

Hello everyone!! Welcome back!! As I said before in this post I will make a review about the second journal I have read. Ok let the review begin...

Tittle : How Phase Theory can be used to improve reading comprehension in chlidren
Author : Monal Dewle
Published : 2th July 2018

Abstract : This journal  gives summary about some development theories which focuses on how development of reading takes place in a child. The theory is Phase Theory. The theory was developed by Ehri in 1999.

Introduction : In introduction the journal explain what the reading and reading comprehension is. Then, in introduction author also explain about the what will discuss in the next chapter.

Literature review : in this chapter author divided the materi into some sub chapter here they are:
The development of theory : in this sub-chapter author explain the history of theory in reading there are three stage of history of theory in reading. First, theory by Gough and Hillinger (1980). Second, theory by Mason (1980) . Third, theory by Marsh, Welc and Desberg (1981) and the final theory by  Firth (1985).

Ehri's Phase Theory : When all these developmental theories were proposed, the only problem being that all the stages in these theories do not cover systematic stages a child goes through when s/he learns a language. Ehri through her Phase theory tries to provide an overall view of how a child can learn to read word and, she challenges the conventional way of teaching word reading through rote learning where the child must memorize entire words with visual cues. However, in case of irregular words it does not work, and it leads to confusion among the child.

Implications :
The author explain the implication of Phase theory in children, such as :
This theory can be used as is important because it helps the teachers to help stu-
dents in reading instruction:
1. It is important for beginners to learn all the letters and to use this infor-
mation to relate to their own speech processes. This will include learning
graphemes such as ‘ch’, ‘sh’ and ‘th’.
2. Children need to develop awareness of phonemes and relate this to their
graphemic knowledge.
3. By the First Grade, teachers should help all children to achieve the full al-
phabetic phase. The major grapheme-phoneme connections, particularly
those involving vowels, need to be learned.
4. Children need practice at learning unfamiliar words both by breaking down
their graphemes to form sounds and using analogy. This will be easier for
students in the full alphabetic phase.
5. Learning to spell is an important part of reading development. The im-
portant initial phase is to be able to create appropriate graphemes from the
constituent sounds. Memorizing word lists should not be started until this is
mastered because this will make learning such lists easier.
6. Later work should expand to learning morphemes, affixes and families of
related words. (Ehri, 1998 cited in Beech, 2005).

There is the review about the second journal I've read, please give me some comment to make me better or suggest me another this I've to do in this blog. See you in the next post guyss thank you anyway💝🙏

The differences between the first and the second journal review

Hello everyone!! Welcome back to my blog. It's been along time I didn't write the article in this blog. Now I want to make a differences between the journal that I've reviewed before and the journal that I've already read.

The tittle of the new journal is "How Phase theory can be used to improve reading comprehension in children". And then, let's go to distinguish these journals.  There are two differences between the first journal and the second journal, that will be discuss bellow. Check it out!!

First, I would like to explain the differences in the structure. In the first journal there are Abstract, Subject Areas, introduction, literature review, Method, finding and discussion, and conclusion. But, in the second journal there are just Abstract, Subject Areas, Introduction, Literature review, and Implications.

Second, the differences in the contents. In the first journal, the contents are disscus about analysis of author to some students about their reading comprehension skill with KWL strategies. In the second journal, the contents are about the Phase theory which is can improve the students' reading comprehension. The differences is in the first journal the author want to check the reading comprehension of students and the second journal, the author want to applied the phase theory to make students' reading comprehension increase.

Thus, the differences between the first and the second journal that I've read. Next I will make the review of the second journal, so stay tune in this blog. See yaa!!!

The Result

Hello Everyone!! It's been long time since I posted my last article about methodology. Now, I will give the results from journal that I've read. So, happy reading!!

Based on the results of the data analysis and discussion that mentioned above, it can be concluded that KWL learning strategies are able to improve students’ reading
comprehension. Some suggestions are given to lecturers and fellow researchers who
will develop and improve the quality of research with similar or similar topics, so
there are some things that can be considered as follows: (1) Students as individuals initially have a high reading interest, but if one uses a learning strategy will have an impact on the results of reading it. Because with KWL, lecturers need to be considered as an alternative to teaching students in reading comprehension; (2) Lecturers as the most important element in the learning process must strive to display learning processes that can facilitate diverse students; (3) Creating a learning process that can
develop the independence of student learning; (4) For the next researcher who will research and develop on the same topic, it is expected to be able to make a more specific measurement tool and a simpler language so that it is easy for students to understand.

Journal Review : Methodology

Hello my beloved readers!! Welcome back!! Now I'm going to continue my review about journal. In this post I would like to review about the method of this journal. Let's move to the review and happy reading😘

This journal has a simple and effective method. It was carried out on students of the Mathematics Education Study Program who studied English language lectures. The research method used a descriptive survey. Descriptive survey is "a method of examining the status of a group of people, an object, a condition, a system of thought or a class of events in the present which aims to create a systematic, factual and accurate description, picture or painting of facts -facts, traits and relationships between phenomena investigated.

The population of this study were the students of the second semester in mathematics education program study who studied English, with a total sample is 40 students.

Sample was taken by simple random sampling technique. Data collection results is reading comprehension test after being treated by KWL strategy. Data analysis techniques used descriptive statistics consisting of mean, median and frequency mode and analysis.

That's all for the method of this journal and wait for the next chapter byeee!!

Journal Review : Literature Review

Hello everyone!! Welcome back to my blog!! In this post I will continue my review about journal. In this review I will tell about literature review.

In the journal that I've read, there is Literature review, in this section the journal tell about what KWL learning strategies is. Not only that, in this section also tell about history of this strategy and how to test students with this strategy.

The aim of this strategy is to facilitate students' metacognitive thinking processes. This strategy can be illustrated by a simple graph consisting of three columns. The first column is labeled "K" which stands for what students already know about the topic. The second or middle column is labeled "W" which stands for what mind students will learn. The third and final columns are labeled "L" which stands for what really isn't learning.

To fill in the "K" column, the lecturer only brainstorms all the different ideas that
are in relative knowledge before the topic. Remember the topic is the person, place,
or thing the chapter is about. If you find that you have limited prior knowledge about
the topic, then the lecturer asks students to find out about topics that can be done in books or the Internet and search by using topics as keywords.

Journal Review

Hello everyone!! Welcome back to my blog and happy reading😄😄
It's been a long time since I wrote my previous article about novel, and now I'm coming back with the different topic. I will make review about journal, yeye!!!

As we know, journal is a scientific work that usually find in academic field. Journal has several topics which is very educated. Now, I will review a journal from Eva Yuni Rahmawati.

There is several structure such as: Tittle; ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS' ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH KWL(KNOW-WANT-LEARN) LEARNING STRATEGIES; Abstract, Subject Areas, Keywords, Introduction, Literature Review, Method,  Findings and Discussions, Conclusion, and References.

In Introduction I have some information that this journal want to tell about reading comprehension and how to analyze the students' comprehension with the different strategies. The strategies is KWL (Know-Want-Learn). This strategy developed by Ogle in 1986. Tis strategy very helpful for teacher who difficult to check their students' comprehension.

Ok! That's my review about components of the journal that I've read, I will continue the review soon. Thank you for reading😍😍
